This project made our hearts sing by proving how powerful creative collaboration can be. When working on the Newcastle International Animation Festival we had this little idea to run a local animation competition and showcase the incredible talent in our city. We approached Daniel Johns and shot footage of him, directed by the talented Kelly Boulton and working with an amazing crew from the University of Newcastle. 37 animators were selected, mentored and each given 5 seconds of the clip. The result blew our minds! When the whopping 2494 frames were combined to create Daniel’s official clip for ‘Going on 16’, these creative geniuses had taken the track to a place we could never have dreamed of. It was wild, psychedelic and in Daniel’s words: “a bit trippy and surreal; … they’re the perfect visual accompaniment for a song like this.”
Results: the clip received national coverage on the Today Show, Rage, 7news, Triple J, Triple M, Lost at E Minor and Monster Children, plus it’s received 70,000 views and continues to raise the profiles of these inspiring local animators.
